http://www.memtest86.com/ is a standalone memory tester, i.e. it's a tiny little program that you put on a bootable floppy. Since it doesn't need an operating system it can run on any PC. It can be useful if you're just not quite sure that your machine is healthy.

I had a problem with an old P5/133 locking up tight. No oops, no crash, nothing. Turns out that the problem was fixed by configuring the ROM BIOS to not assign PCI interrupts using PNP. I told the BIOS to hard-wire them and things were fine. Go figure.
