A great site for help with phone and ethernet wiring is http://www.johnscloset.net/ . It seems to be broken at the moment, so here's another site with ethernet cable pinouts: http://www.ertyu.org/steven_nikkel/ethernetcables.html

http://www.memtest86.com/ is a standalone memory tester, i.e. it's a tiny little program that you put on a bootable floppy. Since it doesn't need an operating system it can run on any PC. It can be useful if you're just not quite sure that your machine is healthy. Ubuntu live CD's have this on them.

I had a problem with an old P5/133 locking up tight. No oops, no crash, nothing. Turns out that the problem was fixed by configuring the ROM BIOS to not assign PCI interrupts using PNP. I told the BIOS to hard-wire them and things were fine. Go figure.
